Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States. Results of a survey by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) show that the typical surgeon performs between 51 to 100 liposuction procedures per year. You may have come across dozens of different techniques and fat removal procedures when exploring the idea of undergoing body contouring surgery. Here’s a closer look from the survey at the top trends in liposuction:

Preferred Methods of Liposuction

According to ASAPS survey results, the following are the preferred methods of liposuction:

  • Traditional tumescent liposuction (51.4%)
  • Power-assisted liposuction (23%)
  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction – Vaser Lipo or LipoSelection (20.9%)
  • Laser-assisted liposuction – SmartLipo, SlimLipo, ProLipo, CoolLipo, and other variations (3.9%)
  • Non-surgical fat removal – Zerona, Zeltiq, Mesotherapy, LipoDissolve (1%)

Traditional tumescent liposuction still remains the method of choice for many surgeons and this is why our physicians only use this technique on their patients today. Patients should take the time to learn about the pros and cons of different liposuction techniques before making a decision to proceed with surgery. In addition to liposuction, patients seeking a non-surgical approach now have the option to use other methods to accomplish their body contouring goals. Non-surgical fat removal methods only received 1% of this number but is represented by the survey only. Non-surgical options such as Coolsculpting (Zeltiq) are growing, accommodating a patient base that has limited time, small areas to treat or prefer a non- invasive approach. This type of procedure does have limitations and can only treat certain areas vs liposuction which can be done anywhere.
