Total Neck Rejuvenation

Total Neck Rejuvenation is achieved during an in-office visit, while you are awake; after the procedure, you get up and walk out of our office! Most patients are active and going out by the next day; bruising (which can usually be covered by makeup) is generally gone within 4 to 10 days.

What is the Cook Procedure?

The Cook Procedure combines the dramatic results a Tumescent Liposuction expert can achieve with the possibilities laser treatments offer. In the hands of a qualified dermatologic surgeon (there are currently only a handful of surgeons in the US trained in the Cook procedure), the results are quite dramatic. Dr. Voss learned the technique in 1998 and has since then performed this procedure on many patients. This has proven to be a very rewarding procedure for her and her patients. There are many types of necks. Some require only Liposuction; others need the Cook procedure. See below for the differences.

Who is a candidate for Neck Liposuction?

Candidates for Neck Liposuction alone have the following characteristics:

  • - A platysma muscle (the "grimacing muscle" in your neck) that need to fulfill certain requirements (Dr. Voss will have to evaluate you in person).
  • - Have a "pinchable" fat pad under the skin and on top of the platysma.
  • - Have good skin tone / elasticity.

Who is a candidate for the Cook Procedure?

Candidates for the Cook procedure have the following characteristics:

  • - Loose, wrinkled and sagging skin.
  • - A platysma muscle that needs support (once again, Dr. Voss will have to evaluate you in person).
  • - On profile, have a cleft (or groove) that runs horizontally under the chin.

How is Neck Liposuction performed?

Most patients will have taken a sedative (like Valium), although this is not necessary. Local anesthesia is infiltrated into the skin and fat of the neck while you are awake. You will be quite comfortable during this although we have been told that it feels a little odd. As soon as you are numb, 4 tiny, 5 mm (1/5") incisions are made: one behind each ear lobe, one just underneath the chin, and one underneath your Adam's apple. Through these ports a very small catheter is introduced and the fat is suctioned out. You will not be able to feel this. This part of the procedure takes about 30 minutes, after which we put a pad underneath your chin and a elastic bandage is wrapped around your neck and head. You get up, dress and leave. The next morning you remove your bandage, although you continue to wear the elastic garment at night during the next 2 weeks. Some people do not bruise at all; most have some mild bruising on the lower half of the neck for several days. Turtlenecks, scarves and makeup can be useful. Nearly all of Dr. Voss' patients feel well enough to venture out the day after the procedure.

How is the Cook Procedure performed?

Liposuction is performed as in (1) above, after which an incision is made underneath the chin. The muscle underneath (the platysma) is plicated (sutures are used to strengthen it) and any fibrous fatty tissue is removed. A CO2 laser is used on the underside of the neck skin (invisible from the outside) to cause it to shrink. This helps tighten the neck. The incision is closed with invisible sutures and a bandage is placed just like in (1). The sutures are removed two weeks later. Recovery is very similar to neck liposuction alone. This is definitely the most advanced and effective procedure for sagging neck skin.
