Is your Makeup a Petri Dish?

A recent study found that bacteria and fungus can grow in common makeup brands. Fortunately, the study also provided some precautions that can reduce the likelihood that your makeup will become a petri dish.
First of all, you may wonder why you should care if the little buggers are growing in your makeup. Other than the “yuck factor”, there are some genuine health concerns. First, if you have sensitive, dry or eczema prone skin, you are more likely to develop skin infections with bacteria or fungus in your makeup. Second, even with healthy skin, it can worsen or cause acne, or cause skin infections or rashes. Finally, if you have a suppressed immune system, a serious infection may result.
Take the following steps to reduce the risk that your makeup will turn into a petri dish:

  1. Avoid sharing makeup
  2. Make sure you tightly seal your makeup when not in use
  3. Store makeup in cool, dry environments and away from hot, humid environments
  4. Never add liquid to product unless instructed to do so
  5. Toss out the makeup if color or texture changes, or there is an odor
  6. Discard old makeup

Further, the current trend in makeup is to avoid preservatives, which increases the importance to discard old makeup. There is generally nothing wrong with the proper use of makeup, but these easy steps can decrease the likelihood that only makeup goes on your face and not bacteria and fungus.
