Pollution can worsen UV damage
Posted in General on March 17, 2011
Preliminary research presented at the American Academy of Dermatology annual meeting suggests that air pollution in urban areas can more than double damage in skin that has already been damaged by the sun. Cigarette smoke and environmental factors (such as very high or below freezing temperatures, high wind and ozone) may also aggravate sun damage. This research is early and needs further testing and review. The take home message is that sunscreen does not directly protect your skin from pollution, but people who regularly protect their skin from the sun may reduce their risk of skin damage from other sources.
