Snoring - a social nuance or a life threatening problem?

Having spent over 25 years analyzing and trying to find the "best" solutions for treating snoring and more serious sleep disorders particularly sleep apnea, a number of interesting observations come to light.

The most common problem is that of snoring that may in many cased be associated with varying degrees of sleep apnea. There is a very wide spectrum of problems ranging from negligible to life threatening.

The key concept in dealing with the problem is to start with the basic analysis of your specific airway configuration. Ultimately, the problem is an airflow dynamics issue. By understanding the specific areas that cause the problem we can now logically find solutions that work. The big problem with prior treatment has been that of trying to make a procedure work with everyone (the square peg in the round hole approach) rather than custom tailoring the correct option for the individual.

We now have a large experience base with ultra conservative techniques that often provide ideal and permanent options for treatment; often resulting in outright cure. On of the common techniques – Somnoplasty is the use of radiofrequency energy therapy that results in significant de-bulking and tightening of obstructive tissues thus restoring a normal airway-painlessly and with virtually no risks.

Bottom line- accurate and comprehensive assessment of the problem sites and then specific focused treatment. This results in a high success rate, often with dramatic resolution of the problems.

Sincerely,

Ludwig. A. Allegra, MD

  • Dr. Allegra,

For a while Somnoplasty was not covered by most insurances. Has that changed?
