Pearls from the AAD

Dr. Voss attended the American Academy of Dermatology in San Francisco - here are a few of the interesting facts she brought home:
- Great evidence that photodynamic therapy (V beam laser with Levulan solution ) done every 6 months, prevents many skin cancers of the face. We perform this procedure in our office and highly recommend it for maintenance for patients at high risk for skin cancer and those that have already had skin cancer. Not only does this photodynamic therapy increase the health of the skin but it significantly decreases the look of photo damage (smoother skin, many fewer brown sun spots and fewer "broken capillaries " on the surface.
- Good evidence that photodynamic therapy (V beam laser with Levulan solution ) done every 6 months clears many forms of acne in patients that do not want to take traditional medications
- No evidence that laser liposuction tightens the skin more than Tumescent liposuction.
- No evidence that anti-cellulite lasers work.
- No evidence that hair-growing lasers work.
- No evidence that non-invasive (infra-red) body contouring make a visible difference.
- The new filler product called Evolence (pig collagen) can cause firm lumps.
- The old filler Sculptra still has trouble with lump formation.
- Perlane and Restylane and Juvederm can easily be erased by an injection of hyluronidase if the patient chooses.
- V-beam laser can be used to significantly quicken the resolution of a bruise.
- Botox in the chin helps smooth out the cobble-stone appearance.
- The filler Preville silk can fill in crowsfeet and lip lines.
- The filler Radiesse is outstanding in filling the back of the hands to make them look young (next time you are in, take a look at Dr. Voss' hands-the left one has Radiesse in it, the right one nothing).
