What is sleep apnea?

  • Sleep apnea is a condition that causes a person to temporarily stop breathing (pause of breathing) during sleep.
  • There are three types of sleep apnea:
    • Central sleep apnea (CSA): This occurs when the brain does not send the signal to the muscles to take a breath, and there is no muscular effort to take a breath.
    • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA): This type occurs when the brain sends the signal to the muscles and the muscles make an effort to take a breath, but they are unsuccessful because the airway becomes obstructed and prevents the flow of air.
    • Mixed sleep apnea: This is a combination of both CSA and OSA.

Sleep apnea develops from snoring; it is caused by snoring that gets louder and louder over a period of time. If you would like more information on this condition, visit our procedures pages.
