A recent study published in Science Transitional Medicine found that the same compound used in Botox injections—botulinum toxin—could help to kill stomach tumors. While Cancer Research UK reports that it is still too early to draw any conclusions from the study, scientists around the globe are continuing to observe the effects of the popular neurotoxin and the growth of tumors. Scientists are speculating that cutting the nerve or injecting the botulinum toxin into the area could help to slow down the growth of tumors and make them more responsive to chemotherapy.
Cancer Treatment and Botox
Although research is still in its early stages, scientists are using Botox to interrupt signals from the nervous system that are responsible for the growth of cancer cells. According to recent news reports, scientists are reporting a 35 percent increase in survival rates when Botox is used in conjunction with chemotherapy. According to researchers, Botox may help to make the cancer more responsive to treatment, which could mean a faster recovery for the patient and a higher chance of eradicating the tumor. So far, the tests have been performed on animals, though human testing is about to begin in Norway, according to the Daily Telegraph. The findings may provide more opportunities for treating stomach cancer and other types of cancers.
