Protecting your skin from UV damage goes beyond applying sunscreen regularly. If you really want to shield your skin from the sun’s rays, you probably have started wearing sun resistant clothing when you are spending more time outdoors. The American Melanoma Foundation reports that regular clothing doesn’t fully protect your skin from the sun and rates less than SPF 8 when wet. However, newer sun resistant clothing can protect your skin from both UVA and UVB damage. You can check the label to determine its Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF).

How Sun Resistant Clothing Works

Sun resistant clothing is made with special fabrics that block UV rays and protect the skin. You will be protected in all areas covered by the fabric but will need to apply sunscreen to other areas such as the neck, ears, hands, and feet.Sun resistant clothing can be a wise investment, especially if you live in a very hot climate or travel to places close to the equator regularly. Some of the benefits of wearing sun resistant clothing include:

  • No need to reapply
  • Protects skin from surfboard and bodyboard rashes
  • No known skin reactions
  • Saves money on sunscreen purchases in the long term
  • Still provides protection when wet
  • Thicker fabrics and darker shades can increase UPF

Tips for Protecting Your Skin from UV Damage

In addition to wearing sun resistant clothing and wearing sunscreen, there are several things you can do to protect your skin from UV damage including:

  • Seeking shade, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Checking the UV Index for the day so you can stay out of direct sunlight
  • Reading the labels of sunscreen products you select
  • Applying sunscreen properly
  • Wearing a hat to cover the top of your head and protect the face
  • Wear appropriate sunglasses
  • Steer clear of tanning beds and sunlamps
  • Wearing makeup with sunscreen

Taking good care of your skin involves protecting your skin from sun damage. Investing in some sun resistant shirts, pants, hats, and other protective clothing can reduce the risk of skin cancer and prevent extensive UV damage.
