Otoplasty, also known as ear pinning surgery, is one of the few cosmetic surgeries sometimes performed on children. Ears that protrude or stick out can often cause a child to be bullied and cause social issues within a child’s development. While children do sometimes undergo the surgery, adults do too. So, what is the best age for otoplasty?
Otoplasty surgery can be performed at any age following the full maturation of the ears. This generally occurs around the age of five. Due to this, it is relatively common for children to undergo the procedure before starting school to prevent bullying or other ostracisation.
However, patients do not have to undergo the surgery this young. Dr. Allegra performs otoplasty surgery on many adults and a good result can still be achieved later in life. Considering the procedure is low risk and quick, it is a fairly low risk procedure, allowing it to be performed nearly any time after age 5.
