FOTOFACIAL

FotoFacial technology offers several benefits:

  • Reduce Rosacea breakouts and reduce facial redness and flushing*
  • Reduce fine wrinkling, freckling and brown spots due to sun damage*
  • Smooth skin texture and reduce pore size*
  • Reduce irregular pigmentation and enhance skin tone*

Our trained physician’s assistant, under the supervision of our dermatologist can selectively diminish unwanted vessels and brown spots by tuning light waves onto blood cells and pigments, causing these unsightly spots to fade. This procedure can be done very gently and with no downtime. An additional advantage is that this procedure even causes the collagen under the treated skin to get thicker, helping reduce fine lines, wrinkles and pore size.* Fotofacial offers improvements such as these to people with Rosacea, flushing, red faces and mottled sun damage.

The face, neck and chest can all be treated. The overall quality, texture and skin tone is improved. The skin is noticeably smoother and looks better.* The treatments are usually a series of five sessions, three weeks apart, (although longer intervals are also acceptable). Each treatment is personalized to the individual’s needs to maximize improvement.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT

Each treatment, occuring in our Kirkland office, takes 30-60 minutes. A numbing cream is applied 30 minutes before the procedure to eliminate practically any discomfort. Next, a cooling gel is placed onto the skin and flashes of focused intense light pulses are passed over the area. There is no discomfort after the treatment, although immediately after the procedure tiny capillaries may flush a bit and brown spots may appear slightly darker. However, make up can be worn right away, and all of these changes fade over a period of hours to a few days. There may be some mild redness and short term swelling, but only occasional minor bruising.

RESULTS? GOOD TO EXCELLENT

You can expect to see a gradual decrease in overall redness, flushing and dilated capillaries. People with visible aging from the sun can expect to see their skin become smoother with a decrease in fine wrinkles, reduction in pore size and fading of sunspots. Many people with Rosacea see an improvement in breakouts and are able to decrease their medications. On average we see about 25-50% reduction in wrinkles, 70% reduction in redness, 50% reduction in pore size, and 70% improvement in skin smoothness. Right after your first treatment, your skin will feel smoother and will have a more even tone. The improvements will be more visible after each treatment.*

HOW DOES FOTOFACIAL COMPARE TO OTHER TREATMENTS

Laser Resurfacing is one of the best methods to treat skin wrinkled and withered due to sun damage. Healing takes about a week, wrinkled skin actually shrinks (instead of begin stretched, as in a facelift), and resulting skin quality is excellent.* The risk of infection and scarring is very low.

By comparison, Photoderm/FotoFacial treatments can reduce facial redness, have no down time, and a risk of scarring close to zero. Light Chemical Peels or Microdermabrasion smooth the surface texture of the skin and clean pores. These are wonderful surface treatments that brighten dull skin, reduce brown sun-spots and help acne breakouts. The FotoFacial treatment removes brown spots as well, but also treats red capillaries and stimulates collagen production for fine wrinkles.* Medium to deep chemical peels (The Body Peel, also done at our clinic) can effectively remove sun damaged and mottled skin, but can take up to two weeks to heal. Only Photoderm/ FotoFacial helps even out skin tone and reduce redness.

Photoderm uses the same intense pulsed light technology as FotoFacial, but in a different way. With Photoderm we can specifically target red vessels in the skin, e.g. red birthmarks, spider angiomas, spider veins or ‘broken capillaries’, and can also focus in on specific bothersome brown spots. Photoderm is a spot treatment instead of an area treatment like FotoFacial. It works very well, but can cause bruising that lasts one week (two at the most). The treated area can be covered with make-up.

WHY CHOOSE NORTHWEST FACE AND BODY

Two reasons stand out: a) Results are very parameter dependent, and if the person delivering the therapy is not well trained to understand both physics and dermatology, optimal results are unlikely. b) Skin cancer detection (see below). Dr. Voss and her staff have personally trained with the doctor that invented the technique, and have extensive experience with the machine and technique that is used for FotoFacial. This is exciting technology, but it is not simple technology, and the specific technique of FotoFacial is the only technique that uses this technology to the best advantage. Skin health is vitally linked to skin beauty. Skin cancer and pre-cancer (Actinic Keratosis) are common on the face. Dermatologists are experts at detection of malignant and potentially malignant lesions. These lesions will be recognized and treatment can then occur. Unfortunately, non-dermatologists may not recognize serious skin health issues, so any non-expert performing FotoFacial may actually delay skin cancer detection.

CONFUSED ABOUT THE NAME?

You are not alone. Many professionals make up whatever name they like for a procedure. The intense pulsed light (IPL) machine itself has several names: Photoderm, Multilight, and Vasculight. More machines will come available in the coming years. The procedure is generically called “IPL photorejuvenation”. The trademarked term FotoFacial was coined by Patrick Bitter Jr. M.D., a California dermatologist. FotoFacial refers to the specific parameters Dr. Bitter has worked out to use these IPL machines to perform skin rejuvenation and get maximum results without downtime. Only physicians personally trained by Dr. Bitter may use the term FotoFacial. If IPL photorejuvenation is offered without the FotoFacial specific parameters, it is less than likely that optimal results will be achieved.
